Groups sponsor one-day wellness event for kids, parents

Two ArkLaTex groups have joined in an effort to inform local youth and their parents about the wellness-centered resources Shreveport has to offer.

The Center for Families and F.R.E.E. are partnering up to bring local youth and their families together in a free one-day event from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at The Salvation Army Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Shreveport.

This event is called Living Local Youth Wellness Day and it is a creative collaboration of local agencies and volunteers coming together to provide an interactive, educational, and fun day for Shreveport-Bossier Youth ages 6-18.

Secretary of State Tom Schedler is encouraging all Louisianians eligible to vote in the April 6 primary election to consider voting early starting this Saturday. Early voting begins Saturday, March 23rd and continues through Saturday, March 30. The polls will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, excluding Good Friday (March 29) and Easter Sunday (March 31).

Blue Cliff College will host a blood drive in honor of Caddo Commissioner Joyce Bowman from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 29, at the college's parking lot at 8731 Park Plaza Drive, Shreveport.

The college also will present Joyce with a 'Community Service Award' and name their Business Library after her.

SPAR's Airport Park Center to offer youth martial arts classes

Shreveport Public Assembly & Recreation (SPAR) Airport Park Community Center has scheduled martial arts classes for youth at the center.  The martial arts class is taught by Sensei Lance Williams of the Way of the Warrior Martial Arts Academy, who will teach Taekwondo, Kick Boxing, Kajukenbo and Self Defense.

The classes will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. for Little Tigers (ages 3-5) and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for Iron Tigers (ages 6 & up).  The cost of the class is $20.00 monthly.  The center is located at 6500 Kennedy Drive.

NAACP announces annual training conference

The NAACP's Shreveport Branch announces that its Southwestern Region VI NAACP Civil Rights Advocacy Training Institute will be held Thursday through Saturday at The Hilton Hotel at 104 Market St. in downtown Shreveport.

The group is asking the Shreveport-Bossier City communitity to support the conference by attending the events that are open to the public.
